Nicaraguan cocoa stands out at Salon Du Chocolat

Managua, Nicaragua; November 26, 2015

Nicaragua has recently participated at the 21st edition of Salon du Chocolat with a delegation that successfully exhibited the cocoa export offer of the country. The event, that took place in Paris from October 28th to November 1st, attracted more than 700 participants of the cocoa industry that covers cocoa buyers, chocolate producers and chocolatier representatives of international renown.

“The participation of Nicaragua at the fair was extremely positive, it is important to mention that we were the only country with a stand from a private exporter, compared with the other exporter countries that were present only through a national delegation”, commented Lars Saquero, General Manager of Ingemann, company producer of a different variety of cocoa types, participant of the event. Likewise, he added that “We have noticed a change within the past months, it is spreading the idea of a Nicaraguan cocoa of high quality, and the buyers are getting closer and closer to the country’’.

Additionally, it was carried out at the same city the final of the competition Cocoa of Excellence, which began in 2014 with national competitors, to select cocoa beans with high potential of flavor that were later transformed into liquor and chocolate, and cupped by a panel of international experts. Out of the numerous cocoa samples from every part of the world, 17 of them were proclaimed Cocoa of Excellence, including one rugged cocoa sample from Ingemann.

Nicaragua has been preparing within the last few years to position itself as a country producer of fine cocoa. At the end of September, the country entered to the list of countries producers of fine or flavor cocoa of the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) with a level of approval of 100 percent. Out of the 22 countries that conform the list, only nine are recognized with that percentage (100%). In that sense, it was created in the country a Sectorial Commission of Cocoa, conformed by representatives of different sectors that integrate the cocoa value chain, with the objective of finding solutions to improve the quality of the product, position it in market niches and to contribute to the improvement of income-producing families, food security and the development of the country.

The participation of Ingemann in the event goes within the competitiveness strengthening program, which is driven by the Nicaraguan Government through the Ministry of Industry Trade and Promotion (MIFIC) with the collaboration of the European Union and PRONicaragua, the official investment and export promotion agency of the Government of Nicaragua. During the year, PRONicaragua has accompanied local companies in different tradeshows in Europe, like Seafood Expo, in Brussels, Belgium and SCAE, in Sweden, among others.
